Martin Woods has become a standard-bearer for Oregon’s new wave of precise, soulful wines, and their Tualatin Hills Gamay is a prime example of how beautifully the Willamette Valley’s cool pockets can nurture this lively grape.

The 2023 vintage shows Gamay in a pure, vivid mode: crunchy red cherries, wild strawberries, cracked pepper, and a touch of forest floor rise from the glass. The palate is sleek and juicy, framed by brisk acidity, ultra-fine tannins, and a cool, mineral edge that gives the wine a persistent, mouthwatering finish.

Fermented with native yeasts and handled minimally, this is Gamay that feels almost Alpine in spirit—bright, energetic, and begging for a slight chill. Think Cru Beaujolais by way of Oregon’s misty hills.

Pair with: charcuterie, grilled salmon, mushroom flatbreads, or a laid-back outdoor lunch.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Wildly fresh and lifted yet not in your face, the 2023 Gamay Noir Tualatin Estate Vineyard entices with a gorgeous blend of rose petals, lavender and crushed blackberries. It swirls across the palate with ripe wild berry fruits under an air of violet inner florals, all guided by zesty acidity. Gently spicy, this finishes with medium length leaving a chalky minerality that creates a tactile grip." —Eric Guido

More about Martin Woods

Evan Martin takes terroir to its logical extreme: he doesn't just pour the forest floor into your glass, he built his winery using fallen oak from his own property. That means the slate and minerals in the wine aren't just reflected in the fruit—they're literally in the wood, too. His Willamette Pinots and Chardonnays push what cool-climate Oregon can do with a sommelier's precision and a wild streak.
