For nearly seven decades, two brothers, Alfred (who took over at 14, when dad got sick) and Rolf Merkelbach, have made their wines in a tiny cellar in the village of Urzig, in the Mosel. They work a tiny collection of vines, planted on their original rootstocks, and fermented in old-fashioned fuder. The Merkelbachs are no longer the young men that were and have decided to retire, and as of 2019 the team from Selbach will use their cellar to make the wines (following the Merkelbach approach).
This is the one last vintage from a steep site in the Wurzgarten vineyard, and influenced a little by botrytis. tThis is exotic and intense Riesling with a touch of mint, a touch of saffron a gentle sweetness, and a light-on-its-feet mineral freshness that makes the wine seem so...timeless. They are true treasures in the world of wine.

There are a few estates that haven't changed for decades. But not many—López de Heredia comes to mind, and Lafarge in Volnay. When you taste their wines, you experience something ancient and beautiful. Time travel.In the case of the Merkelbachs, that time is the 1950s. Nothing has changed since then: for all those decades the same two brothers have made wines from the same terroirs, over and over again, using the same ancient methods on their beautiful, old, ungrafted vines. They started young and are both around 80 years old today.Like López and Lafarge, the wines are extraordinarily good. They have to be for the project to survive so long, working this way.
