This dry white is how she makes that case. Verdelho is an unusual partner for Chenin, and it comes here from one of the Cape's most thoughtful old-vine specialists. For this cuvée she sources Chenin from old, dry-farmed bush vines in the Swartland's Paardeberg. The Verdelho comes from two very different soils: decomposed granite and clay in Voor Paardeberg, and Bokkeveld shale in Bot River. She picked both grapes on purpose, because they thrive in dry, warm conditions, which is a practical, forward-looking kind of farming. The 2022 season didn't make it easy. A wet winter and a cool, late spring gave way to heat spikes in December and January, so Niemann picked some vineyards early to keep the wines fresh. She calls her 2022s bright and ready to drink now, so there's no reason to wait on this one.
