The medieval fortress-port of Monemvasia in southern Laconia shipped sweet wine across Europe under that name for centuries, and the variety itself had all but vanished from the mainland until George Tsimbidis, a physicist turned grower, brought cuttings back from the Cycladic island of Paros in the 1990s. He went on to win PDO status for Monemvasia-Malvasia in 2010, the first official version of the wine in living memory. This is the dry expression: fermented in stainless steel with no oak, from organically farmed terraces on limestone and schist about five miles from the Myrtoan Sea. A genuine piece of wine history that also happens to be delicious.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Monemvasia-Winery-Monemvasia-Dry-2024-White-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1786631972
