You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Le Pergole Torte is magnificent, just as it was last year. Rich, dense and explosive, with stunning depth and texture, the 2016 possesses off the charts intensity while remaining light on its feet for such rich a powerful, layered wine. There is almost no perception of tannin. Black cherry, plum, lavender, menthol, spice and new leather all meld together in a pliant, striking Pergole Torte endowed with tremendous pedigree and nuance. Put simply, the 2016 is off the charts great. The only reason the 2016 does not earn a perfect score is that cramped quarters in the cellar oblige Montevertine to bottle Pergole Torte in several lots." -Vinous

"These lovely 2016 vintages from Montevertine impress and excite on all levels. The 2016 Le Pergole Torte takes top prize and represents a crowning achievement for Martino Manetti and his family. Fruit comes from vines that are between 20 and 50 years old, and the wine is carefully aged in oak casks, slowly incorporating complexity and textural richness during this careful process. This classic vintage is chiseled and sharp, and the fruit is framed with exacting precision. It is softly layered in the mouth and just gorgeous on the long finish. Le Pergole Torte will give its best many years from now, so put this bottle way at the back of your cellar." -Robert Parker

"I tried this at a preview tasting co-hosted by Monteraponi and Montevertine at Florence's Four Seasons hotel and haven't been able to get it off my mind since. Comparing 2016 to the warmer 2015 vintage, Martino Manetti describes the former as more balanced in ripeness and more representative of the region. It hints at mint, thyme blossom and violets but is still somewhat demure. Nevertheless, it impresses with its silky smooth tannins, mouth caressing texture and unwavering energy. Uncluttered by new oak nuances, the beautiful purity of fruit shines through as clear as a bell. A gorgeous wine with a promising future."

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its elevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.
