A recent visit to the Paitin estate in Neive was full of delicious wines and fascinating history. The Pasquero-Elia family has been working these vineyards since 1796, and bottling the wines as Barbaresco for more than a century, even before their village officially joined Barbaresco. Three generations of the family are at work today in the vineyards and cellar, working organically and crafting Nebbiolo wines with equal power and grace.

Savory herbs, smoke, tobacco, incense, menthol and licorice race out of the glass in an intense, structured Barbaresco loaded with class, energy and pure power. There is plenty to look forward to, once the tannins soften a bit. The 2010 has closed down pretty dramatically since the last time I tasted it, about a year ago. Readers will have to be patient.
