Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera sold a patent, used the money to buy a small 16th-century stone winery, and made their first wines there in 1972. Their neighbours were growing cereal and beets, and the couple went against that and planted Tempranillo in Pesquera de Duero. They named the wine after their home village, and it's still the family's flagship. The 2022 Crianza is 100% Tempranillo from south-facing vineyards on clay-loam and limestone around the village, aged in American oak. It's a benchmark more than a rarity, the Ribera everyone should know, and an easy way into one of Spain's great red regions. The family says it's ready to drink now.
