Petra Bredova, Vina Na Slupkach Rysak, 2019

Vinař (vigneronne) Petra Brédová spends her days driving her tractor through vineyards, crushing the patriarchy beneath its wheels, bulldozing industrialized wines, and forging a new path to bring the Czech classics back to life.   Slovakian sommelier turned Czech-natural-wine-maven, Petra's story follows a similar narrative to our other favorite new vigneronne of the year: Pauline Passot of Domaine de la Grosse Pierre in Beaujolais. But while Pauline has a contingent of female compatriots to offer support, and a famous wine region as a blueprint, Petra has neither.    When she was asked,”Which lady do you think is the biggest personality in the domestic [Czech] world of wine?” Her answer was “From the domestic [Czech] world of wine, I know only the wives of winemakers.”    What she lacks in counsel, she makes up for in tenacity and an uncompromising commitment to organic farming and natural winemaking of exceptional quality. And while communism may have set the region back 50 years, Southern Moravia was once a viticultural crown jewel of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Petra’s wines harken back to this forgotten time — but with tractors, and a female winemaker at the helm.   Her 1.5 hectares of 45 year old vines on the rolling limestone and granite hills only produce 3,000 bottles a year. The name 'Vina Na Slupkach' translates to "guilt on the skins" — it's a play the phrase 'wine on the skins', which is the only kind of wine she makes. Rysak is a traditional blend of lightly macerated white and red grapes, low in alcohol, earthy and elegant.   Petra’s version is outstanding. Although new to us, it seems to us to be an instant classic. We reserved everything we could, but only 10 cases made it to the US, so all orders will need to be confirmed.   A blend of Neuberger and St. Laurent, both indegenous grapes to the area. Effusive and aromatic, floral, delicate and stoney. Really grippy but a water pure minerality in the center. interesting and unique play of herbs, spices, light red fruits, orange peel, and a chalky finish. Infinitely pairable with any food of your choice, perfect for a broad festive meal, or drink on its own with a light chill.
