Renaissance, above Oregon House in Yuba County, is the estate that got North Yuba recognized as an AVA in the mid-1980s, and its site swings from freezing nights to searing afternoons, which is why the wines keep acidity at ripeness. This is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Merlot and touches of Petit Verdot and Syrah, at 13.6% alcohol - fermented on native yeasts, raised in used barrels, unfined and unfiltered, in the low-intervention style Gideon Beinstock, who also founded Clos Saron, established here. It was held back for years in barrel and bottle before release, and at more than twenty years old it is in a savory, tertiary phase rather than a fruit-forward one.
