renaissance-granite-crown-2004-750ml
Renaissance, Granite Crown, 2004

A roughly even split of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon - a blend almost nobody in California attempts - grown on the decomposed granite the wine is named for. Renaissance farms 1,300 acres above Oregon House in Yuba County, terraced around a granite dome between about 1,700 and 2,300 feet, with cold Sierra nights that hold acidity through very hot days; the estate is why North Yuba became an AVA in the mid-1980s. The house method under Gideon Beinstock, who also founded Clos Saron, was dry farming, organic viticulture, native-yeast fermentation, used barrels, no fining or filtration, and long aging before release. Syrah brings the smoke, olive and pepper, Cabernet the frame, and the granite site gives both a stony lift. Two decades on it is mature and open. Stand the bottle upright for a day, decant gently off the sediment, and finish it the same night.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Renaissance-Granite-Crown-2004-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1787841660
