Ampodium is the old Provencal word for "Ampuis", and you can think of this as a village wine representing the different terroirs and vineyard sites of that village. It is far more approachable in its youth than the single crus. Of all the Rostaing line-up, this one has improved more than any other in the last few years. Better yet, 2020 is a fresh, balanced, classical year. Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry, olive and pungent flowers are sharpened by a suggestion of black pepper. Supple and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors and a suggestion of star anise. Finishes pliant, sweet and focused on the penetrating finish, showing smooth tannins and excellent tenacity." -Vinous

"Pierre Rostaing has been shortening the cuvaison for this cuvée, and the 2020 Cote Rotie Ampodium received closer to three weeks on the skins than four. It's still impressively dark and rich, with scents of black olives, violets, raspberries and a touch of orange zest. Medium to full-bodied and velvety in feel, it looks like a strong year for the estate's blended wine. It was the end of a long Sunday of winery visits when I slumped into Le Beau Rivage in Condrieu to meet Pierre Rostaing for dinner (and a few more wines). Since I hadn't been able to visit the winery, he brought some representative blends of wines still in barrel, plus a few other treats to taste, but we didn't cover the full range of wines this year."

"Looking like a very good year for this blend, which is concentrated, lively and juicy, with plenty of assertive but fine tannin which suggest waiting a while. Hard to make a definitive judgement on tasting just two barrels, but this is looking very promising. Four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak (limited new), with natural yeasts and as many stems as possible."
