Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

"The 2014 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti captures everything that makes Nebbiolo so seductive. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2014 offers up a striking range of spice, floral and dried fruit character with an expression of weightless power and transparency that only Nebbiolo offers. Readers should expect a delicate Barbaresco. Other wines in this range offer power and/or finesse, but the Pajè Vecchie Viti is all about elusive, ethereal beauty. I especially admire how the wine gains structure and depth with time in bottle."

"The Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti impresses thanks to its classic lines and lasting intensity. Like the other wines in this series, winemaking is rigorously traditional, with three weeks of submerged cap, inoculation with indigenous yeasts and five years of aging in both oak and cement. This wine represents a selection of fruit from the 1.8-hectare Pajè site. Pajè remains on the more elegant and nuanced side of the Barbaresco spectrum, and this wine reveals delicate floral tones, wild berry, cassis and crushed stone. The effect is stirring yet subtle. Production is 2,560 bottles." -Robert Parker

"Juicy, bursting with macerated cherry, plum, leather and eucalyptus aromas and flavors, this shows appealing harmony, complexity and length. Though approachable now, this will likely improve with age. Offers a long, minerally finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 210 cases made."

"Yet another incredible showing from the estate's dazzling range of 2014 Barbarescos, this opens with enticing scents of dark spice, camphor, new leather and wild red berry. The palate boasts a weightless concentration, delivering bright red cherry, strawberry jelly, orange zest and licorice alongside taut, polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it lifted and balanced, and a hazelnut note caps off the close. Drink 2024–2034." -Kerin O'Keefe
