Ampodium is the old Provencal word for "Ampuis", and  you can think of this as a village wine representing the different terroirs and vineyard sites of that village. It is far more approachable in its youth than the single crus. Of all the Rostaing line-up, this one has improved more than any other in the last few years. 2017 is a top Cote Rotie vintage and this may be the best ever Ampodium!

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a  more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"Deep, brilliant violet. A mineral-tinged bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, peony and licorice, and a peppery flourish builds as the wine opens up. Shows impressive energy on the palate, offering juicy boysenberry and cherry compote flavors complemented by suggestions of spicecake and candied licorice. Sweet and seamless in texture, finishing on a lingering floral note, with impressive energy and smooth, harmonious tannins."

"Hints of peppery spice and licorice add complexity to the blueberry and cassis-scented nose of the 2017 Côte Rôtie Ampodium. It's medium to full-bodied, with silky but firm tannins and a long, dusty finish. It should be approachable in a couple of years but drink gracefully for a decade and a half. (" -Robert Parker
