From the northern corner of Austria in the Weinvertel comes the small family estate of Setzer. This area was once an ancient seabed which is now laden with limestone, sand, and gravel, unique in the region. The limestone gives a new take on Grüner Veltliner with more mid palate lift and a salty finish, nearly Chablisiean. The family has moved towards organic methods, is increasing their high density selection massale plantings and use a deft hand in the cellar.

WE 93
"Wonderfully pure notes of creamy ripe red-apple flesh are insistent and inviting on the nose. The palate then adds spiky, bright freshness to the affair and creates a most juicy, fruity and utterly refreshing dry wine, full of energy and drive. It is that ripe red-apple tartness that trumps all." -Anne Krebiehl

What importer Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine...

It isn’t a mutated Grüner, though it tastes like an aspect of GV, the shiitake and roasted pepper side, without the citrics and leaves. The vine requires a dedicated grower, and its proponents are more like “protectors” than just vintners. I didn’t go in search of it but it kind of found me, via Setzer (and Ecker), and when I like it I offer it to you.
