At the west end, the Pool Block faces across Napa Valley at 600 to 650 feet on volcanic rhyolite. At the east end, the Lost Orchard sits in a shallow bowl at around 800 feet, the coolest corner of the ranch, just before the land drops into Conn Valley. (A few of the Petite Sirah vines that were growing in the Pool Block when Wayne and Virginia Snowden bought the place in 1955 are still standing. Their grapes have dried to raisins by Cabernet harvest, so the family has never picked them and keeps them as a remembrance.) 2023 suited this kind of site: a cool, even year and one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory, so the fruit ripened slowly. The cellar work is hands-off, with native yeasts, no added acid and no fining, followed by 19 months in French oak, only 30% of it new. This is Napa Cabernet in the classic style rather than the plush one.
