Collectors call it \"FE\" or \"Freddie.\" It's named for the ancestor whose Diploma of Honor at the Brussels International Fair first made the house's name outside Alsace. The fruit comes from the Grand Cru Geisberg and Osterberg vineyards, the south- and southeast-facing slopes above the estate in Ribeauvillé that have supplied this wine for generations. Their soils are marl, limestone and sandstone plus shell limestone (Muschelkalk), and Geisberg is just 8.5 hectares of small, steep terraces, one of the smallest Grand Crus in Alsace. Trimbach says great vintages of Frédéric Emile last twenty years or more, and this bottle is a rare chance to see what time does to the house's flagship without having to wait for it yourself.
