Itata is where New World winegrowing actually started, with vines first planted in 1551, and un-grafted vines like these have become genuinely scarce; that rarity is what the label is named for, and the De Martino brothers, Marco and Sebastian, bought this parcel in 2013 specifically to keep its traditions going. The vineyard is still worked by hand and plowed by horse, and the maritime climate brings enough rain — around 900 mm a year — that irrigation was never part of the equation. Vinification stays deliberately old-fashioned so the granite and the sea air come through unmasked. The result is Cinsault at its most transparent: light on its feet, savory, and built for drinking rather than contemplating.
