Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The NV Brut Grand Cru is a gorgeous wine. Ample, creamy and inviting, the Grand Cru possesses striking intensity throughout. The dosage of 10 grams per liter seems perfectly judged for the personality of these sites in Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and sage are some of many notes that build on the palate as this impeccable Champagne shows off its personality and breed. There is so much to like here. The current release is equal parts 2013 and 2012. Dosage is 10 grams per liter. Disgorged: April 2016."

"Always a blend of 3 different vintages and aged for 3 years on the lees, Varnier-Fannière's NV Brut Grand Cru is 100% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. It opens with a clear and ripe, but (lemon) fresh fruit aroma intertwined with chalky brioche and nougat flavors. Highly elegant and delicate on the palate, this is an aromatic, charmingly round and lovely mineral Brut with a pretty long, pure and iodine finish. This is an absolutely stimulating crowd and wine-freak pleaser. Champagne drinkers of the world: unite and take over."

"The Fannière family own four hectares of vineyards in the Côtes des Blancs region spread across four grand cru villages of Avize, Oiry, Oger and Cramant with vines aged between 30 and 60 years old. Denis Varnier, the current vigneron, uses traditional methods to make these champagnes including the use of the Coquard basket press. 100% Chardonnay, 0 g/l dosage. Very dense on the nose. This could be a good start for someone who wants to discover a bone-dry champagne. Lively and reverberant. Very firm and interesting." -José Vouillamoz

Wine Spectator

WS 90
"The smoky earthiness of chardonnay from Avize gives this wine the kind of Gauloises-like power usually associated with red grapes. The initial impact is broad and juicy; the lasting impression is light and effervescent. A bold Champagne that’s distinctive, yet approachable."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 90
"This crisp, fruity wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay in Varnier Fannière's Côte des Blancs vineyards. It has a citrus flavor, with touches of green plum and quince, and a tight, mineral character. Ideally, this should be aged for a year, but it is drinkable now." -Roger Voss

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
