Vilmart is on the Burgundian end of the Champagne spectrum. Older examples of his top wines come to taste a lot like a mature Chevalier-Montrachet with fermentation and aging in barrels. But unlike a true C-M Vilmart blocks the malos, retaining great mineral tension. Aside from their rosé, the wines are dominated by Chardonnay—and not the pencil-lead Chardonnay of the Côte des Blancs, but the more generous Chard that you get on the Montagne de Reims where the black grapes tend to be more dominant.

More important than these ""technical"" details, Vilmart is obsessed with good vineyard work, has plenty of low-yielding older vines, and happens to make really delicious wines. Taste and you will learn. And if you have already learned, you will almost certainly want to taste some more!

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Grande Reserve (base 2016) is airy, gracious and wonderfully lifted. Readers will find a Champagne that captures all the Vilmart signatures. Orchard fruit, citrus and light floral notes all grace this very pretty and expressive entry-level offering. The current release is based on 2016, with 25% 2015 and 25% 2014 reserve wines. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2018."

"The Vilmart NV Grande Reserve represents a blend of relatively young vines of Chardonnay with around 20 Pinot Noir. These are from vintages 2009 and 2010, though the result displays a surprising degree of lees autolysis in the nose, joined by smoky and chalky nuances that come out more emphatically on the silken, finely effervescent palate. Suggestions of jellied red currant along with apple and lemon as well as a faint aura of barrel put me a bit in mind of Chassagne-Montrachet. This finishes with bursting brightness, ringing clarity, mouthwatering salinity, cheek-pinching piquancy, and consummate refreshment. It should fare deliciously for at least the one or two years."

"Satiny in texture, this shows a sense of finesse that belies the power of this dense and focused Champagne. Tightly knit flavors of blackberry pâte de fruit, biscuit, honey, star anise and toasted almond show beautiful integration with the intense backbone of acidity and rich underpinning of smoky minerality. Drink now through 2025. 110 cases imported." -Alison Napjus
