This is the patient side of a vineyard first written down in 1282, when it was still spelled \"Marsten.\" Morstein is the hillside behind one of Keller's Grosses Gewächs, his dry grand crus. The family's parcel for that wine sits high on the slope at 240 metres, facing due south, on clay marl over limestone rock. Here the same site goes into an Auslese, made from selected late-harvest grapes, instead of a bone-dry wine. A 2005 that has done its waiting is what sweet Auslese is built for: by now the sweetness should read more as richness than as sugar.
