This is the entry level of the Cuilleron range, and it drinks like a first-class introduction to what the 50 miles between Vienne and Valence do with Syrah: pure varietal fruit off granite and alluvial soils, no makeup. Vinification is refreshingly old-fashioned — parcel by parcel, indigenous yeasts, partial destemming, about three weeks macerating in open tanks — and the élevage is deliberately light-handed, seven months split half in barrel and half in tank so the fruit stays front and center. The estate has been in Verlieu, a hamlet of Chavanay just south of Condrieu, since 1920, and Yves's son Edgar now runs the winemaking, one of the generation taking over the Northern Rhône's leading names.
