Abbazia is located in Novacella within the Isarco River Valley. It was founded in 1124 by the Augustinian Order of Canon making it one of the oldest wineries in the world. The region is known for making exceptional white wines due to its high elevation, steep slopes, and its granitic schist soils that were carved out by ancient glaciers. The terroir encourages the vines to struggle enabling small yields. Leading to rich, aromatic, and fresh wines. Abbazia has mastered the art of wine making in the region: merging a rich history with modern technology to create delicious affordable wines that provide an insight into the region. The abbey’s philosophy of supporting themselves and helping their community is a central pillar in every aspect of their lives, which includes their winemaking. They practice organic farming and use indigenous yeast to ferment the wine, reaffirming their deep connection to the land. They own their own plots but also buy grapes from small growers within the community.
