Bethel Heights is a pioneer of Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, crafting wines that capture the region’s volcanic soils and cool-climate vibrancy. Their Estate Chardonnay is a benchmark for the area, showcasing the precision and restraint that define top-tier Willamette Valley whites. The 2021 vintage, shaped by a long, even growing season, delivers a wine that is both generous and finely etched, with exceptional purity and balance.

Notes of lemon curd, green apple, and white peach unfold alongside flinty minerality and a touch of brioche from gentle oak aging. The palate is textural but never heavy—thanks to aging in a mix of neutral and new French oak, which adds depth without overshadowing the wine’s natural freshness. Compared to richer California Chardonnays, Bethel Heights Estate leans into elegance, with crisp acidity and a long, focused finish.

A perfect pairing for seafood, roast chicken, or creamy pastas, this is a Chardonnay that drinks beautifully now but has the structure to evolve over the next 5–7 years. A true reflection of Oregon’s cool-climate terroir.

There's a reason the Willamette Valley has become synonymous with Pinot Noir produced in the United States, and Bethel Heights makes some of the best-- not to mention incredible Chardonnays as well!

In 1977 the Casteel family bought 75 acres of promising looking land northwest of Salem, which has now grown to over 100 acres. Since their first commercial vintage in 1984 the wine has always been produced by the Casteel family, with patriarch Terry at the helm until 2006, when his son Ben took over as winemaker.

The land has been the family's home for nearly 40 years and they treat it with the love and respect you'd expect: they are certified sustainable and on the forefront of the Willamette's eco-friendly practices.

This commitment to the land, in conjunction with the perfectly suited terroir, results in some spectacular wines (both red and white). The Casteels pride themselves on terroir-driven wines, and in fact all but one of the Pinots they produce are named after a place. This is also the reason they grow Chardonnay: it expresses the terroir perfectly.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 94
"The 2021 Chardonnay Estate features creamy lime panna cotta, green pear and smoky flint tones on the nose at this youthful stage. Light-bodied and silky, the palate is tight and focused yet concentrated, and its long, ethereal finish suggests there's more to come."

"For less than $40, you'll struggle to find a better American Chardonnay. This wine shows classic Eola-Amity complexity, marrying spice, fruit and structure."
