Owned by the Delon family (of Léoville Las Cases fame), Château Potensac has long been known as a Left Bank insider’s pick—serious terroir, traditional winemaking, and the ability to age gracefully. The 2012 vintage was cooler and more restrained than its blockbuster neighbors, making it ideal for classicists who value balance over power.

Now with 12 years of age, the wine shows earthy complexity: cedar, graphite, and dried blackcurrant wrapped in savory spice. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and the kind of freshness that keeps mature Bordeaux alive at the table. It’s not showy, but that’s the point—this is Médoc built on structure, not flash.

Perfect for roast lamb, mushroom dishes, or a quiet decant on a cool night. For Left Bank fans who want provenance and polish without chasing classified growths, Potensac 2012 is drinking beautifully right now—with more years still in the tank.

Château Potensac is one of Bordeaux's great under-the-radar gems. Like any true claret, it can be classically restrained and firm in youth, but wonderfully perfumed and cooly delicious with bottle age.

The wine is made by the Delon family, who also make legendary Saint-Julien 2nd growth, Léoville Las Cases. Potensac comes from vines further north, on gravel-over-limestone hills in the Médoc appellation just beyond Saint-Estèphe.

"Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Potensac surpassed my expectations from barrel, because as I stated back then, it has developed more flesh to counterbalance those prenatal hard tannins. It has an attractive if unspectacular raspberry, strawberry and tobacco-scented bouquet, quite closed at first, opaque, but opening with several minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe blackberry fruit laced with tobacco and sea salt. I appreciate the finish here. There is satisfying substance, a gentle grip and a classic pencil lead, almost Pauillac-like finish. Enjoy this upstanding Médoc from Jean-Hubert Delon over the next 10-12 years." -Robert Parker

WE 90
"One of the showpieces of the Médoc, this structured and firm wine has strong Cabernet flavors that give both dry tannins and juicy black currant fruits. Still youthful, this balanced wine is likely to age well."
