Tucked just outside Saint-Joseph’s official borders, Jean-François Malsert works steep granite slopes above the Rhône, farming old vines without chemicals and bottling his wines as humble Vin de France. But there’s nothing modest about what’s in the glass. His 2022 Syrah has the soul of classic northern Rhône—inky, spicy, and perfumed—but with a freer, more untamed energy.

Whole-cluster fermentation brings a lifted, almost wild herbal edge, while the granite soils drive that signature Rhône tension—bright acidity, firm but silky tannins, and a savory undertow that balances out the black fruit and violets. It’s Syrah in its raw, expressive form, closer to early Gonon or Dard & Ribo than anything polished or international. Throw on some grilled lamb or just chill it down slightly and let it ride—it’s got enough nerve to go solo.
