a gorgeous, deep wine

As I said last year, if I were told that I could buy, cellar, and drink only one wine for the rest of my life for under $50/bottle, the Barbaresco from the Produttori could well be my choice. It is consistently excellent. It is fun to drink on release. It becomes seriously impressive after just five years of cellaring, but it can really go the distance if you want it to.
 
But this year I can be a little more specific. If I had to pick one single vintage of this great wine to buy and drink over and over again, it would be the wine that just arrived in our shop: the 2021. Or at least, the 2021 would appear on a very short list alongside great releases like the 2016. 
 
The Produttori, as I and many others have often said, is the greatest wine cooperative in the world. The village of Barbaresco is full of tiny producers who do not grow enough grapes to make their own wine. So they sell it to the Produttori, who now has a multi-generation track record of producing superb Barbaresco from these grapes.

Although the 2021 doesn't quite have the immediacy of last year's vintage, it very quickly reminds you of why you love Nebbiolo, and with just a few more minutes of focus and attention, you discover nuance and depth that just aren't quite there in the lesser vintages. I am very confident that this will age better than any release of this wine since the 2016, and I plan to put double the usual amount in my own personal cellar.
