Monvigliero is often called the “Grand Cru” of Verduno, producing Barolos with finesse, perfume, and a Burgundian-like silkiness. Fratelli Alessandria, one of the benchmark producers in the village, captures that elegance perfectly in this 2020 vintage. It’s a wine that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression—structured, yet lifted and beautifully expressive.

Wild strawberry, red cherry, and blood orange jump from the glass, backed by layers of dried roses, white pepper, and a hint of savory herbs. The tannins are present but ultra-fine, giving the wine structure without weight, while bright acidity keeps it fresh and vibrant. This is a Barolo that rewards patience but is already showing incredible charm—decant it now for a glimpse of its brilliance, or cellar it for 15+ years. A natural match for truffle risotto, roast game, or just a quiet evening with a great bottle.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their familly has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is an attractive, light-bodied wine. It is graced with crushed flowers, tobacco, mint, dried cherry and cedar. Monvigliero is always a lighter Barolo, but the 2020 comes across as a bit more ethereal than the norm." -Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

WS 95
"A touch of spices mellows the profile of this red, lending accents to the core of cherry, strawberry, rose and mineral aromas and flavors. Beautifully balanced, with finesse and an expansive finish. Stylish and elegant."

Wine Enthusiast

"Crushed wild strawberries, raspberries, and elegant floral notes captivate the senses. Tart red cherries and cranberries dance on the palate, accompanied by a delicate herbaceous touch. This pretty Barolo showcases the beauty of Nebbiolo with its vibrant acidity and refined tannins. A transformative wine with a balance so perfect, it would score 10s in the Olympics."

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

Monvigliero is arguably the most important cru of Verduno and Fratelli Alessandria has some of the biggest holdings there, 1.4ha. Exposures are South to Southwest, 250-310m. High average vine age of 45 years. Made similarly to the Barolo San Lorenzo. Monvigliero exalts the beguiling florality and spice that are Verduno’s calling card.
