Outward Wines, Chenin Blanc Shell Creek Vineyard Old Vines Paso Robles Highlands District, 2021
is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
Hard to imagine better domestic Chenin Blanc. Good acid, but relaxed and pliant shape, quite limpid but with some mealy gold bass notes reminiscent of Savennieres, especially Boudignon. Not as powerful as Boudignon, not as acid-driven, but still quite compelling.
From one of the first plantings in San Luis Obispo in 1971 on limestone.
Grapes were foot stomped and skin macerated overnight before pressing then ferments naturally in neutral French oak barrels. Aging for 10 months, unfined and unfiltered, as all of the wines below are.
