Somló, Hungary’s smallest yet most distinctive wine region, is famed for its volcanic soils and age-worthy whites, and Somlói Vándor is one of its rising stars. Winemaker Tamas Kis, a former sommelier turned vineyard guardian, is devoted to organic farming and minimal intervention, allowing the unique terroir to shine. His 2022 Juhfark is a textbook expression of this rare grape—powerful, mineral-driven, and built to evolve.

Lemon zest, green apple, and quince lead the nose, but what sets Juhfark apart is its smoky, flinty depth, a direct reflection of the basalt-rich soils. The palate is structured and intense, with gripping acidity and a slightly waxy texture that adds weight. While often compared to Chenin Blanc or Riesling, Juhfark has a wild streak of its own—racy, firm, and unmistakably Somló.

Best paired with rich seafood, roasted poultry, or anything kissed by smoke, this is a wine that thrives with food and time. Enjoy now for its youthful energy, or cellar for a decade to see its full potential unfold.

Somloi Vandor is one of our favorite Hungarian producers; from an extinct volcano on the edge of Lake Balaton, it's a source for extraordinary examples of terroir-driven, indigenous Hungarian varieties, all in minuscule quantities.

Winemaker Tamas learned to make wine in Eger, home of Hungary's famous red wine, Bull's Blood, but once he set eyes on Somlò's incredible terroir, he was hooked. His farming is organic, and in both the vines and the cellars, there's minimal intervention; the wines burst with freshness and a purity unique to those winemakers who highlight a grape's true character rather than muddying it with wood or chemicals.
