Camus-Bruchon's Limestone-Laden Pinot: A Rare Bargain in Burgundy

Stylized image of Camus-Bruchon wine

Chorey-lès-Beaune is a classic insiders village. A bit overshadowed by the more famous terroirs in Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune, the wines in Chorey just don’t get enough love.

Which makes no sense! The vineyards in Chorey are loaded with limestone, and a great vigneron can make wines of great depth, poise, and elegance. Camus-Bruchon's Guillaume Camus is definitely the right grower for this terroir. In fact, the majority of Camus-Bruchon’s vineyards were planted here just before World War I by Guillaume’s great-grandmother.

Camus-Bruchon has been a Flatiron favorite for years, because the wines are absolutely delicious and the prices remain shockingly reasonable. In their youth, the wines show ripe, juicy Pinot fruit supported by a crunchy mineral core. As they age, they unveil more of that soil-driven limestone character, as the fruit and minerality fuse into something seamless and silky.

Guillaume is doing everything right: In the vines there are no chemical treatments, harvest is all by hand with careful berry by berry sorting in the field. He uses up to 30% whole clusters and the wines ferment naturally before spending a year aging in barrel.

Today we are excited to share the 2022 Chorey-lès-Beaune 'Le Grand Saussy'. Guillaume has managed to capture a deliciously poised, juicy, classically styled red Burgundy that is ready to show its stuff at the table tonight, yet has 10-15 years ahead of it, too.

Camus-Bruchon, Chorey-lès-Beaune Le Grand Saussy, 2022 $45.99
"Discreet oak influence is present on the cool, fresh and equally pinot-like nose of spicy red cherry. There is better volume and density to the delicious middleweight flavors that possess a suave mid-palate mouthfeel, all wrapped in a dusty and mildly austere but importantly given the hail damage, no dryness." Allen Meadows, Burghound
