Spain’s Sierra de Gredos region has been hot for a while now. Here, Garnacha becomes something otherworldly, ethereal. The poor granite soils, the high elevation, the ancient vines — these all work together to impart real finesse and elegance to a grape that many have written off as boozy, brash, and basic.
Its popularity doesn't make working here any easier, though: pruning, treating, plowing, and harvesting are all backbreaking work. And as more and more young people move to the cities and away from agriculture, the Gredos has almost been lost to time.
But there's still hope for this mountainous region. Producers like Comando G have reinvigorated the region, giving smaller producers an entrée as well. Las Pedreras was established in 2020 by Bárbara Requejo Frutos and Guzmán Sánchez de la Parra, a Gredos native and restauranteur. Bárbara, a Ribera del Duero native, is young — we’re not sure she’s 30 yet — but her resumé is impressive, with stints at Haut-Brion, Pierre Péters, and Peay under her belt.
Theirs are glowy, ultra fresh examples of Garnacha — delicate, almost wispy in texture, but explosive on the palate. Their Arquiton rosé is pale salmon, appearing almost deceptively tame…until you take a sip, and you’re met with waves of grapefruit and blood orange, and flavors of tart strawberry juice and stony minerals. And then it finishes with bracing acidity and terrific salinity. It’s got everything we look for in quality rosé.
Los Arroyuelos is Garnacha from 7 different plots, each vinified separately according to its specific needs (some are fermented whole cluster, others completely de-stemmed). It’s aged in a combination of stainless steel tank and old French oak barrels, yielding a wine that is pure fruited and radiant, glou glou-esque without sacrificing complexity. It’s a beautiful merging of Gredos tradition with modern sensibility and taste, and one we can’t wait to drink with a slight chill this summer.
These wines aren’t just delicious, they’re also quite rare, with just a few thousand bottles coming from a handful of parcels of 70+ year old vines. You don’t want to miss them!
Las Pedreras, Cebreros Garnacha 'Los Arroyuelos', 2024 $29.99
Silky, featherweight Garnacha with a cornucopia of ripe fruit flavors: red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate. The structure is typical for such a high-elevation wine, with refreshing acidity and lightly grippy ripe tannins — an undeniably alpine wine.
Las Pedreras, Cebreros Garnacha Rosé 'Arquiton', 2025 $35.99
In 2025, this rosé shows off much of what made us fall in love with Las Pedreras a few years ago. There’s a beautiful harmony between the delicate strawberry fruit and the savory mineral and herbaceous undertones, bridged by brisk acidity and a juicy, supple structure. Drink now or see how it evolves over the next couple of years.
