A Polish-born sommelier who traded Toronto's fine dining scene for California's Central Coast—and found his voice in single-vineyard Pinot Noir of extraordinary sensuality. Paul Lato arrived in Santa Barbara County in 2002 with no formal winemaking training, apprenticing under Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat while bartering labor for barrels and equipment. The Duende bottling comes from Gold Coast Vineyard in the heart of Santa Maria Valley, where sandy, well-drained soils and vines now over thirty years old—from an old Martini selection originating in Burgundy—yield fruit of remarkable concentration. Completely destemmed, fifteen months in fifty percent new French oak, minimal intervention throughout. The 2015 was the earliest and fastest harvest on record, with yields down forty to seventy percent, producing intense, concentrated wines. Rose petals, strawberries, cherries, mint, and sappy herbs with a soft, silky, seductive palate and wonderful length. Drink now through the next several years.
