Clos du Jaugueyron’s Margaux 2019 is a true expression of the elegance and finesse that this prestigious Bordeaux appellation is known for. From a vineyard that blends traditional winemaking practices with a modern approach, this wine is a perfect example of how Margaux wines can combine power with grace. The 2019 vintage captures the essence of the region, offering both depth and complexity without losing its refined character.

The nose is a blend of ripe dark berries—blackcurrant and raspberry—complemented by delicate floral notes of violets and a hint of cedar, offering an immediate sense of sophistication. On the palate, the wine is smooth and well-structured, with soft tannins that give it a silky texture. The fruit flavors are rich and round, with subtle undertones of spice, tobacco, and a touch of earthiness that add layers of complexity. The finish is long and harmonious, with a fresh, mineral-driven edge that leaves a lasting impression.

Clos du Jaugueyron Margaux 2019 is a wine that will evolve beautifully over the next decade or more, but it is already drinking wonderfully. It’s an excellent choice for those who appreciate the elegance of Margaux, with its perfect balance of ripe fruit, floral finesse, and refined structure. Pair it with roasted meats, duck, or aged cheeses to fully enjoy its complexities.

Michel Theron (of Margaux estate Clos du Jaugueron) is one of our favorite winemakers in Bordeaux, one of a handful of vignerons who are making the region truly exciting again.

Theron farms biodynamically, which is still weird for Bordeaux, and almost impossible to do in the Médoc. It takes guts (and maybe a little insanity) to pull it off year after year. But he does.

The cellar work is delightfully low-tech and low-intervention, with the wines aged in mostly neutral barrels or cement – practices diametrically opposed to those of big châteaux like Palmer, Margaux etc.

But none of that tells you how good the wines are. They are phenomenal. Like the great Patsy Cline, they are thoughtful and refined without the subtlest sacrifice of soul or purity.

Despite the natural approach, Theron's wine is not wild, funky affairs –they are transparent and convincing reminders that Bordeaux has some of the greatest terroirs in the world.
