In the heart of Saumur-Champigny, Clos Rougeard's "Poyeux" 2014 stands as one of the most exceptional expressions of Cabernet Franc. Known for its precision and elegance, Clos Rougeard crafts wines that are both powerful and refined, and this Poyeux is no exception. The 2014 vintage captures the true essence of the Saumur-Champigny terroir, a blend of complex fruit and mineral depth.

The wine opens with aromas of ripe red berries—cherry, raspberry, and strawberry—interwoven with subtle floral notes of violet. As it develops, earthy undertones of tobacco, graphite, and dried herbs emerge, adding layers of complexity. On the palate, Poyeux 2014 is full-bodied, with silky tannins that provide structure while maintaining elegance. The acidity is well-balanced, ensuring the wine’s freshness while allowing the dark fruit and earthy notes to shine. The finish is long, with a lingering mineral quality that speaks to the chalky soils of Poyeux and a soft, savory spice that persists.

This wine is perfect for pairing with roasted meats, game, or a selection of aged cheeses. While it is drinking beautifully now, its fine tannins and depth suggest it will continue to evolve and develop greater complexity over the next decade. A true masterpiece of Cabernet Franc, Clos Rougeard’s Saumur-Champigny "Poyeux" 2014 is a testament to the artistry of this legendary estate.

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S. What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling. The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

"The 2014 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux is very aromatic on the nose that exhibits perfectly ripe cherry notes. Generously fruity, intense and with excellent concentration, this is a silky, super ripe yet fresh Cabernet with fine and crunchy tannins and floral notes from nose to tail." -Robert Parker

"Also quite reductive at this stage, some aeration will enable its aromatic complexity to unfold, revealing floral notes of lilies and violets as well as a touch of Bourbon vanilla. The palate is full-bodied yet delicate and fresh, sustained by classy, polished tannins. The liquorice-infused finish has a tell-tale, appealing touch of gastronomic bitterness."
