93 points Wine Advocate "Here is a typical Coutet nose that is just beginning to find its groove: barley sugar and quince scents typifying Barsac, augmented by Seville orange and lime. The palate is viscous and extremely well focused with fine mineralité and tension. It feels quite youthful and linear vis-à-vis its peers and concludes with a tangy, marmalade-lavished finish." (NM)

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 90
"The 1988 Coutet has a much better nose than the 1983 or 1985 with tangerine, yellow plum and light adhesive scents. This has a spring in its step. The palate is fresh on the entry with good weight, a fine bead of acidity, and marmalade mingling with tangerine and ginger, fanning out nicely toward the finish. This is the best bottle of the 1988 Coutet I have encountered, though do not approach it with sky-high expectations. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The lighter-bodied, drier 1988 is less weighty than the 1989, with attractive, spicy, vanillin, citrus scents, medium body, and an earthy note that kept my score from going higher." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

WS 91
"Extraordinary complexity and finesse are the hallmarks of this earth-scented, butter-laced, honeyed, lemon-flavored gem. The finish seems to never end thanks to all that great acidity. Better after 1998."
