Château d’Oupia’s Les Hérétiques is a testament to the power of old-vine Carignan, a grape often overlooked but capable of producing soulful, expressive wines. Sourced from 40- to 100-year-old vines in the rocky soils of Pays d’Hérault, this 2022 bottling showcases the raw beauty of southern France with a balance of fruit, earth, and spice. Named in honor of the Cathar “heretics” who once sought refuge in the region, this wine embraces tradition while offering incredible everyday drinkability.

Juicy blackberry, black cherry, and plum lead, complemented by notes of garrigue—thyme, rosemary, and lavender—along with a touch of peppery spice. Half of the wine is aged in tank to preserve freshness, while the other half spends time in neutral oak, softening the tannins and adding just a hint of depth. The result is a red that is both rustic and smooth, with enough structure to stand up to hearty dishes but plenty of charm to drink on its own.

A perfect companion for roast chicken, grilled sausages, or a classic cassoulet, Les Hérétiques is the kind of wine that feels at home on any table. Enjoy it now with a light chill, or let it evolve over the next few years for a softer, more nuanced expression. A fantastic value from one of the Languedoc’s most beloved estates.

The story of this winery begins when André Iché inherited his Minervois-based estate several decades back, and he immediately realized he had some special vineyards. The vines were old and located on rocky hillsides, but they needed a little bit of tender loving care. He nursed these old gnarly vines back to health, and began making wines from these old Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache plantings.

The Chateau d'Oupia d'Herault wines were immediately met with praise with Robert Parker proclaiming them producers of the world' best bistro wines. Andre’s daughter Marie-Pierre took over in 2007 and started producing this cuvee of mostly very old vine carignan and a bit of Syrah in honor of the Cathars, a peace-loving group of vegetarian Catholics who were proclaimed heretics by the church and thus massacred back in the 13th century. Memories run long in rural Roussillon.
