The Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg vineyard (Höllenpfad = 'Path to Hell'—likely referencing the steep slope and distinctive warm red color of red sandstone) was added to the Dönnhoff estate in 2010. The Rotliegend sandstone strata create a landscape bathed in rich warm evening light. Grapes grown here tend to be very small with intense, nuanced aromas; resulting wines are elegant with spicy mineral fruit and excellent aging potential. This 2024 Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru dry) shows the vineyard's signature: elegant with pikant mineralische Frucht (spicy mineral fruit), the ideal terroir for dry Riesling combining generous intensity with stony character. The fluttering bouquet shows great delicacy with unique balance between density and phenomenal mineral energy. Ready now or age 10-15 years.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2024 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs, from the very heart of this red Permian sandstone site, tingles with a sense of pepper on the nose. The palate is beautifully clear and luminous, only revealing tender notions of the usually herbal savor as shimmering touches of tansy and yarrow. This is like a sublimation of Riesling. It’s ultra-light, ultra-bright and so deeply rooted in stone." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

RP 94
"The 2024 Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg GG Roxheimer Riesling opens with ripe, juicy, rather generous fruit and a salty base. Powerful, dense and compact on the palate, with lots of citrus notes in the finish, this 2024 still needs a lot of time but also shows great promise." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
