What is this wine?
Emrich-Schönleber is a benchmark estate in the Nahe, Germany, known for razor-sharp, terroir-driven Rieslings. Frühlingsplätzchen is one of their two Grand Cru (GG) sites, along with Halenberg. Its name means “little spring meadow,” and the vineyard’s red slate soils, steep slopes, and cooler microclimate yield wines that are finer, more floral, and more delicate than the denser, more powerful Halenberg bottlings.

Why get this wine?
This is Riesling at the highest level: dry, precise, and deeply expressive of site. Emrich-Schönleber’s GGs rank among Germany’s elite, yet they remain underpriced compared to famous Mosel and Rheingau counterparts. The 2024 release captures the estate’s hallmark clarity and elegance, making it an essential buy for collectors and lovers of mineral-driven whites.

What does this wine taste like?
Intensely aromatic, with citrus blossom, lime, and red apple layered over wild herbs and stony minerality. The palate is focused and linear, with crystalline acidity, fine structure, and a long, elegant finish. A wine of grace and precision rather than sheer power.

When should you drink this wine?
Beautiful young for its perfume and energy, but best with 5–15 years of cellaring to unlock its full complexity. Perfect with refined seafood, white asparagus, or simply to savor on its own.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2024 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs was grown on red Permian stone. It seduces on the nose with a floral, citric charm that wraps itself around stoniness. Underneath that, white peach shimmers. The palate has a beautiful, svelte but creamy core, uniting lemon and aloe vera with real zestiness. This forms a gorgeous contrast that comes together beautifully and with much elegance." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
