The Chardonnay 'R' represents a departure from Fürst's traditional focus on Spätburgunder and Riesling, indicating the producer's willingness to explore beyond regional norms. The 'R' designation likely indicates a special cuvée or experimental expression. At two years old, this 2023 Chardonnay shows the winemaker's commitment to quality across varieties. Franken's continental climate creates Chardonnay with good acidity and mineral precision—distinct from the oak-forward style of warmer regions. This wine demonstrates that great producers achieve quality across varieties. For those seeking to explore Fürst's full range, this wine offers new insights. Expected arrival February 26.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 96
"The intensely yellow-colored 2023 Chardonnay >R< is very intense and concentrated on the fresh, substantial and mineral nose and is a bit more reductive and savory compared to the corresponding Weisser Burgunder >R<. Lemon and grapefruit rind aromas as well as herbal nuances make this a classical, savory and saline, irresistible Chardonnay. Aged in pièces on the gross lees for 16 months, this is a full-bodied, generous and textural Chardonnay from the "grand cru" Karthäuser in Astheim, which is characterized by its meager, white shell limestone soils. The wine is very well balanced, charmingly fruity and quite feminine on the palate, finishing with tension, lots of salt, lemon freshness and mouthwatering grip. This is still discreet yet highly promising." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
