Weingut Knewitz in Appenheim, Rheinhessen, represents nearly 200 years of family winemaking tradition across three main villages. Son Tobias, trained at Geisenheim, took over in 2007 with wife Corina and brother Björn, transforming the estate into a quality leader. Invited to join the prestigious VDP in 2022, Knewitz recently achieved recognition for distinctive terroir expression. This 2023 dry Riesling from Nieder-Hilbersheim shows the cool-vineyard character (Steinacker is their coolest site) with fresh acidity, citrus, and mineral definition. The 25 hectares across three villages allow Knewitz to explore diverse microclimates within Rheinhessen, producing wines that surprise and delight. Ready to drink now or age 7-8 years.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2023 Riesling Nieder-Hilbersheim was harvested 80% in the Steinacker site and 20% in Honigberg, an elevated, northwest-facing site rising to 260 meters on limestone with iron ore. It was fermented completely in Halbstück and Stück. While slight reduction appears here, too, this has a different nature—smokier, stonier. The palate speaks of the limestone coolness and serene, bright, pure ripe lemon. Elongated, tangy, flowing and juicy, it boasts a lovely undertow of salt and nerve." -Anne Krebiehl MW

"Tense but with some floral notes as well as all the intense minerality. Still youthful but with so much fruit it seems more approachable than the Appenheimer. Leaves its imprint on the palate!"

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
