Schlossgut Diel from Nahe, Germany, sits on a lower Nahe steep south-facing slope. The proprietor is Caroline Diel, and the estate holds three vineyards: Goldloch, Burgberg, and Pittermännchen. Diel is the largest landowner within the steep Goldloch vineyard. The property was purchased by the Diel family in 1802.

The Cuvée Caroline is a selection of the very best barrels from the vintage. This 2020 Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) shows wet and dried oak leaves framing restrained dark cherry fruit—deep, pure, intense, peppery. The wine is silky, smooth, fresh, very elegant, emphasizing finesse and elegance over power. At six years old, the wine shows beautiful maturity. The 12.5% alcohol (relatively low for modern Pinot Noir) contributes to the elegance and freshness. The wine has enormous aging potential; it's drinkable now but will be best from 2025. The south-facing slope creates ripe fruit with excellent structural integrity.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2020 Pinot Noir Caroline is a selection of the very best barrels. The Pinot Noirs are released within one year of bottle age. Both wet and dried oak leaves frame the restrained, dark cherry fruit. A cool florality and a smidgeon of white pepper set subtle accents. The palate is light and fine-boned. A subtle tannic structure has the pleasant, tender crunch of starched silk chiffon. Freshness pervades and emphasizes the stony, cool aspect of the wine. The long, fresh finish underlines the elegant tannin structure." -Anne Krebiehl MW

Robert Parker

"The 2020 Pinot Noir Caroline is deep, pure, intense and peppery on the remarkably refined and clear nose that indicates ripe and elegant cherry fruit intertwined with tobacco as well as iodine and tea aromas. Silky, smooth, fresh and very elegant on the palate, this is an intense and salivating mineral, palate-cleansing Pinot that is very different from the rich and dense Réserve and more based on finesse and elegance. In 2020, the Caroline Pinot is, so to speak, the Apollonian version of the Dionysian Réserve. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
