From Weingut von Winning's exploration of Pinot Noir comes this exceptional 2022 'An den Achtmorgen' Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru dry red). The vineyard sits in Ruppertsberg's Reiterpfad, one hectare planted in 2009 with 6,000 vines per hectare, south-facing with sandstone over limestone soils. The combination of warm Haardt mountain location with limestone structure creates ethereal, elegant wines with aromas of plum and candied cherries, finely woven tannins, and cherry aromatics providing great length. Classified as Grosses Gewächs since 2018, this 2022 shows mature complexity at three years old: plum and cherry with the limestone structure that Winning's terroir delivers. One of Germany's finest Pinots, ready now or age 8-10 years.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
