Premium doesn't always mean ripe and sweet—at Ziereisen, it means old vines, extended lees aging, and unwavering commitment to a grape others abandon. The Steinkrügle (Stone Valley) Gutedel comes from 40+-year-old vines and spends 20-24 months on lees, an almost shocking investment for Chasselas. The result is a wine of remarkable complexity: light-to-medium bodied yet layered with vanilla and cedar from neutral aging, apple and quince, green fig, and cardamom complexity that deepens with each taste. A whisper of quinine on the finish, lemongrass aromatics, and a floral persistence that belies the wine's delicate origins. This is Gutedel mature, thinking, and transformed by time into something approaching profundity. A meditation wine disguised as a humble regional white.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 93
"The 2020 Steinkrügle is another fascinating Chasselas from Hanspeter and Edeltraud Ziereisen that comes from 40+-year-old vines and was aged on the lees for about 20 months in traditional oak casks. The wine exhibits an intense golden-yellow color and a deep, pure, concentrated and intensely mineral bouquet with ripe, elegant fruit aromas intermingled with iodine notes of crushed stones and refreshing phenolic nuances. Dense, lush and elegant on the tropical-flavored palate, this is a fine and erotic Chasselas with a long, complex and stimulating saline finish. The acidity is fine and fresh and perfectly integrated with the phenolic structure and elegant texture of this youthful and age-worthy white from Germany's southern tip. It was bottled with 11% stated alcohol but with a density, intensity and complexity you can hardly measure. After the superb 2017, this is another over-performing Steinkrügle." -Stephan Reinhardt

"This is lovely, with lemongrass, yellow plum and Jonagold apple flavors seamlessly layered, offset with a quinine hint and carrying through a long, floral finish. A fine representation of the variety, it combining an ethereal feel with an alluring flavor profile." -Aleks Zecevic

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
