2003 was one of the hottest years on record for Barolo—months of sweltering heat that forced grapes to ripen fast and pushed wines toward richness and power. But Giuseppe Mascarello's traditional approach in the Monprivato vineyard balanced that intensity with restraint and old-world technique. The result is a stunner: dusty stone, dried cherry, leather, and perfumed raspberry wrapped in soft tannins. This wine shows what happens when a committed traditionalist works with difficult conditions—the heat shaped it into something lean but firmly structured, with a personality all its own.
