What is this wine?
Pastourelle de Clerc Milon 2020 is the second wine of Château Clerc Milon, a Classified Fifth Growth in Pauillac owned by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family. Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère, it is sourced from the same gravel and clay-limestone soils as the Grand Vin. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (about 20% new) for 16–18 months, offering a refined yet approachable expression of the estate’s Grand Cru Classé terroir.

Why get this wine?
Pastourelle de Clerc Milon delivers the pedigree and polish of a top Pauillac at a fraction of the price. The 2020 vintage—one of exceptional balance and concentration—produced wines of ripe fruit, freshness, and supple tannins. This cuvée combines Left Bank structure with immediate charm, making it an ideal introduction to the château’s elegant style or a smart buy for everyday Bordeaux enjoyment.

What does this wine taste like?
Rich and aromatic, with blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and graphite. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, showing silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a long finish of dark fruit and spice.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink from 2025–2038. Decant 30–60 minutes before serving. Perfect with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, or mushroom dishes.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2020 Clerc Milon is a total knock-out. The 2020 has come together impressively with élevage. It offers up a heady mix of blueberry jam, crème de cassis, chocolate, new leather, spice and crushed rocks, with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character driving the overall feel" -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper, exotic spices and burning embers introduce the 2020 Clerc Milon, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered wine that's seamless, concentrated and refined, with lively acids and a long, saline, violet-inflected finish. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot, it's a terrific effort from this clay-limestone terroir that has benefited from so much investment in recent years." -William Kelley

"53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. First vintage for Caroline Artaud (ex Fourcas-Hosten). Cask sample. Dense and profound with layers of fruit and tannin. Subdued nose with a floral note. Tannins powdery but very finely layered. Exudes power but is harmonious at the same time." -James Lawther MW

Decanter

"Powerful, a little austere with tight black fruits that will benefit from adding flesh over ageing, as the tannins are a little angular right now. The freshly crushed mint leaf finish is beautiful, and this is is ripped with powerful nuanced fruit, tobacco and earthy flavours, followed by waves of violet flowers. Good quality, not as exuberant as some years of Clerc Milon. First year of Caroline Artaud to oversee the entire vintage, as Jean-Philippe Danjoy has headed over to Mouton. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 50% new oak. There is also 0.6% of Carmanère in the blend." -Jane Anson

Wine Spectator

WS 94
"Sleek and refined, with a very fine-grained structure supporting a core of black currant and black cherry reduction notes along with hints of chalky minerality and sweet tobacco. The long finish has cut and energy, thanks to savory nuance." -James Molesworth

"Rich and smoky, this wine has great presence. Tannins are almost sweet with their roundness, the wine enveloping the structure with the jammy black fruits."
