Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2017 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is quite closed and austere almost shockingly so. It will be interesting to see if more Asili sensuality emerges over time. For now the 2017 is very obviously on the severe side with good energy but less through the mid-palate. Sweet dried cherry mint chalk and dried herbs linger." -Vinous

"A tightly wound yet succulent Barbaresco with aromas of graphite macerated plum and cherry giving way to rose hip mineral and more fruit flavors. Packs plenty of energy courtesy of the firm vibrant structure. Long complex finish. Bordering on racy with terrific harmony and class."

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

VINEYARD
A small (.22 hectare) parcel in a prime location in the middle of the Asili hill..
SOIL
Asili is particularly rich in limestone and marl mixed with strands of reddish yellow sands.
VITICULTURE
The vines in this parcel are all at least fifty years old -- many much molder. He maintains the old vines as long as possible but whenever he needs to replace a vine it is propagated from a vine in the same parcel.
VINIFICATION
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 80-90 days.
AGING
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
