The 2011 vintage was a curveball in Napa—cooler, trickier, and lower yielding—but in the right hands, it produced wines with elegance and edge. And few handled it better than Colgin, whose IX Estate Syrah in 2011 is a case study in restraint and refinement.
This wine leans more Rhône than usual—blackberry, violets, black olive, and smoked herbs, with a lifted, savory profile that trades sheer power for detail, structure, and aromatic finesse. There’s still depth (this is Colgin, after all), but it’s wrapped in freshness and spice, with fine-grained tannins and a long, savory finish.
From the dramatic, volcanic slopes of Pritchard Hill, IX Estate has always been one of Napa’s most distinctive vineyard sites. And in 2011, the Syrah from this site feels like Hermitage by way of Howell Mountain—cool-toned, soulful, and beautifully age-worthy.
Already drinking well now with a short decant, but will reward another 5–10 years in the cellar. Perfect with lamb, charred eggplant, or a night where subtlety beats swagger.
