Alexandre Chartogne, the visionary behind Chartogne-Taillet, uses the Hors Série label to bottle small, distinctive expressions of place—often single-vineyard or method-specific releases that highlight unique soils, grapes, or aging approaches. While each vintage can vary in blend or site, what stays consistent is the house’s hallmark: minimal intervention, native yeasts, long aging, and Champagne with a sense of identity.

The 2020 vintage was warm but balanced, producing wines with generous fruit and chalky tension. This Hors Série bottling captures that duality—ripeness and minerality in harmony. Expect aromas of ripe orchard fruit, crushed limestone, toasted brioche, and white flowers, with a palate that is taut, saline, and deeply textural. There's richness on the mid-palate, but the finish is long and driven by electric acidity and soil signature.

Disgorgement and dosage details often vary by release and are typically noted on the back label or cork—these wines are meant for collectors, Champagne nerds, and drinkers who want to taste the vineyard before the brand.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2020 Extra-Brut Hors Série is especially lifted and aromatic. Chalk, mint, citrus peel, slate and white pepper all take shape in the glass. Chartogne-Taillet fans will find a Champagne of great reserve, tension and nuance. Brisk mineral accents wrap it all together. This ethereal Champagne hits all the right notes. Alexandre Chartogne chose to age the 2020 on capsule and in a more reductive environment than in some other vintages." -Antonio Galloni

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
