In the compact 400-acre appellation of Quincy, where Sauvignon Blanc finds one of its most distinctive expressions in the Loire Valley, Domaine de Villalin's "Grandes Vignes" represents the estate's commitment to showcasing what old vines can achieve on this region's distinctive terroir. The cuvée draws its name and character from mature plantings rooted in the sandy, gravelly soils that define Quincy's landscape, creating wines that stand apart from their more famous Sancerre neighbors with a particular minerality and depth.

Jacques Rouzé's approach at Villalin emphasizes the linear precision that has made Quincy a quietly respected appellation among Loire Valley connoisseurs. The sandy-gravel terroir imparts both freshness and structure to the Sauvignon Blanc, allowing the variety to express itself with restraint rather than the tropical exuberance found elsewhere. This is Sauvignon Blanc with a sense of place, where the grape's natural acidity finds balance with the subtle complexity that comes from old vines and careful winemaking.

The "Grandes Vignes" bottling represents the estate's flagship expression, produced in limited quantities, making it a genuine discovery for those seeking authentic Loire Valley character beyond the well-trodden paths of the region's more celebrated appellations.

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Located in the heart of the Villalin lieu-dit. Five generations of family vignerons have worked the domaine’s 7.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc.
Orientation
Blend of multiple parcels, varied exposure
Soil
The vines are planted in a blend of sand and gravel, a mixture that captures and retains the sun’s heat easily. Its sandy composition particularly encourages acidity in Sauvignon Blanc, providing an ideal & complementary terroir to this tart variety.
Viticulture
A portion of the vines are still worked with horse-drawn plows. Husband and wife team Maryline and Jean-Jacques Smith still harvest completely by hand
Vinification
Fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks, creating the most natural wines possible that express the typicity of the Quincy soils.
Aging
Aged in tank
