Weingut Dautel from Württemberg, near Stuttgart, is led by Christian Dautel, who practices biodynamic farming on 20 hectares. The soils are cored marl and stony clay with limestone inclusions—excellent for Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).

The 2022 Forstberg Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs (dry Grand Cru) shows baking spice and chocolate notes with deep, rich plum notes. The palate is dry with higher acidity. At four years old, the wine is drinking beautifully. Württemberg is underrated for Pinot Noir; the continental climate and diverse soils create wines of real character. Eighteen percent of the Dautel estate is dedicated to Spätburgunder, with the majority focused on Riesling. This wine shows what can be achieved with serious attention to Pinot Noir in a non-traditional location. The biodynamic farming contributes to the wine's complexity and mineral expression.
